Paternity Questions???

What kind of samples does the lab need?
Most biological samples are acceptable. We can use a buccal swab (mouth swab), a tube of blood, or drops of blood on a blood spot card, hair follicles with root. However, we prefer to use the buccal swab sample since it is easy to obtain, completely non-invasive and painless.

Are buccal swabs as accurate as blood?
Yes. Since people have the same DNA in every cell in their body, all sample types give the same results. No sample is "more accurate" than another.

An alternative to testing blood is a method of sample collection using buccal (cheek) swabs. Since the DNA is the same in every cell of the body, the accuracy of testing performed on cheek cells collected with a swab is the same as using blood. The phlebotomist collects the sample by using a buccal swab and gently massaging the inside of the child’s mouth. DNA can be extracted from this sample. This procedure is non-invasive and painless. It is possible to draw blood from the adult(s)and swab the child. Buccal swabs are also available for adults as an alternative to blood collection.

Can paternity testing be performed before the
child is born?
YES. With DNA analysis, paternity testing can be performed prior to the birth of the child. DNA testing can be done with a Chorionic Villni Sample (CVS), which is generally performed around 10-13 weeks of pregnancy, or through Amniocentesis, generally performed 14 -24 weeks of pregnancy. Either of these procedures would have to be performed by an OB/GYN. If the mother does not have an OB/GYN, we can assist her in locating a physician. The testing is completed and results are air expressed within 2 weeks. Any woman interested in prenatal DNA testing should discuss these procedures with an OB/GYN. If the mother has more specific questions, please call us. We have experienced prenatal specialist on staff to answer your questions.

Can testing be done if the mother, alleged father, or both are missing or deceased?

Yes. With DNA analysis, paternity testing can still be performed, although the test would involve more analysis. If the mother and/or alleged father are deceased, samples can be collected and testing can be performed after their deaths. In cases where one or both parents are unavailable, testing involving grandparents is possible. Samples are collected from the alleged paternal grandparents, and analysis is performed to determine if they are excluded from grandparentage. If not, the chance the alleged grandparents transmitted the genes to their son is calculated and used to determine the probability of paternity. If the alleged paternal grandparents are unavailable, testing can be performed on the alleged father's siblings or other offspring, although the evidence supporting the probability of paternity is not as strong.
